Your Nurse Has Been Tuhminated
Jon Carroll really loves Arnold Schwartzenegger's thoughtful campaign against nursing in California:Ahnold boasted of his victory over the nursing profession by calling nurses 'special interests' and announcing that he had 'kicked their butts.' That is such a useful way to refer to nurses, because everyone I know is really angry about nurses and all the care they give and the extra hours they work and sick people they comfort. Nothing gets the public on your side quicker than nurse-bashing.
Amazingly, though, there has been limited public outcry. Do we think that nurses make too much money? Do we think they whine too much about understaffing and compulsory overtime and standing helplessly by while cost- saving procedures compromise the level of care? Do we resent their yachts and their skiing trips to Davos?

As a Californian, I can explain. Arnold is untouchable right now. His comment to the nurses that they were a special interest angry with him because he "kicked their asses" was boorish at best. The public shrugged. People like nurses fine. But they LOVE Arnold. At the moment, he can do no wrong.
Here is an example of his clout: Proposition 71 was under 50% in the polls within two weeks of the election. Then, Arnold supported it and the measure gained 10 points overnight.
Arnold's charisma, his movie star status, his continual good cheer, his not taking politics too seriously, e.g., his "girlie men" put down of Democrat oppnents, goes over very well to a public sick and tired of political correctness. Until and unless his policies are seen as hurting the average Joe or Josephine, this is how it will be for the indefinite future.

You know.. I thought our California would fall apart if Arnold was elected governor.
But, it's over a year and I am still here and so is California. Amazing! ..Maurice.

Well, I thought he would be a good governor. And in many ways, he is. I voted for him, for gosh sakes. But I do worry about his egoism. And it turns out he is very Establishment.

But Wesley don't you think he is also very anti-Establishment in his views of stem cell research and some social/moral issues? In some ways, I think it is good to have a governor who can find reasons to accept certain issues on both sides of the political fence. ..Maurice.
