In the Lab Again, I Just Can't Wait to Get in the Lab Again

The coolest school on earth, the University of Texas, has just announced maybe the neatest name for an endowed chair ever. You know you want to be the Willie Nelson Professor of Stem Cell Research. Heck I'd even work in Dallas, where embryonic stem cell research might get you killed, if I could be named for Willie. Then again, there are the tax consequences. [thanks Art Caplan]

I could quibble about some of the fine points of Alta Charo's Perspective piece, mainly on matters of emphasis, but I think she does properly identify many of the key issues raised by recent appeals to conscience by health care professionals.
In her concluding remarks about "best efforts at accommodation," however, she seemingly ignores the option of eliminating the monopolistic control of access to the services in question. After all, it is indeed true that in a great many cases, "birth control, abortion, and in vitro fertilization ... are lifestyle choices, not treatments for diseases," and not just because somebody says so.
FDA scientists think Plan B is safe enough to be sold over the counter. I imagine it right next to the condoms in my grocery store. A woman's liberty is enhanced, and a pharmacist is deprived of martyrdom. This is a single case, not a general solution. But it might point the way to a better strategy.
I wish half the energy that is expended heaping scorn on religionists was directed to the development of safe and effective contraceptives and abortifacients that could be sold over the counter.

Sorry... my previous posting was meant as a comment on "When is it OK to Refuse to Deliver Care?"
I'll copy it to it's proper home.
