Toronto/Gates Bioethics Initiative
The University of Toronto has launched a new effort in the developing world, the product of their continuing effort to expand bioethics - considerably - in terms of its focus on the world's health at large. The program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and others for $10 million. Toronto has become the leading program in the world in executing large-scale initiatives in bioethics and this is another great example.contribute a comment

Wonder how much *real* medicine the money spent on this study could buy?
It's also funny that Dr. Singer (MD, not the Princeton PhD) counts 5 Billion people in the "developing world." That would include China and India, wouldn't it?
Actually, the "ultimate goal" of the Grand Challenges Project is good. But, $10 Million for bioethics study on how interact with other cultures?

Thanks to a 3-part CBC documentary, the story begins...
The Secret Life of Ranjit Chandra
St. John's, Nfld., may seem like an unlikely place for scientific scandal to brew, but in hindsight it appears, perhaps, the perfect place.
For almost three decades, Memorial University provided an out-of-the-way corner of the scientific world for the career of Dr. Ranjit Kumar Chandra to flourish.
Over the years, he became a world-renowned expert in the field of nutrition and immunology, was the recipient of the Order of Canada, and said to be a two-time Nobel Prize nominee, a man they called "the Jewel of Memorial."
