The American Medical Students Association Statement on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

AMSA's Interim Policy Proposal on Stem Cell Research is out:
The American Medical Student Association

BELIEVES that all types of stem cell research, including embryonic stem cell research, umbilical cord blood stem cell research, and adult stem cell research, should be explored to the fullest potential, while abiding by appropriate ethical guidelines, for the purposes of advancing treatment and preventing disease.

BELIEVES that nuclear transplantation, used for the purpose of creating embryonic stem cells that are an immunologic match for a given patient, and for the purpose of studying genetic defects and congenital anomalies, is an acceptable form of research.

One thing you will figure out if you are deepenough involved in research is that most doctors know very little about these things. Most of them rarely have enough time for family let alone the time to fully educate themselves on an issue like this.

Case in point, Tannhauser,
"WHEREAS AMSA policy discourages the influence of the politics of abortion in the direction and funding of federally-supported research efforts"
The history of the "politics of abortion" is relatively unknown even among the leaders of tomorrow's doctors. Otherwise, there would be some acknowledgement about the relative value of the human embryo.

That's nice.
AMSA's endorsement might mean more if it wasn't so busy promoting dubious and unproven treatments.

Assuming proper ethical guidelines: Riiight.
