A Better Way to Use an iPod. Trust Us.

Well if you are wondering why nobody is blogging lately it is because no one at AMBI has slept in 5 days, while we've prepared for the launch of our new, online masters in bioethics.

Working with Apple, we've designed a program that not only has great teachers who are also mentors - and who have office hours, lots of interaction, and live sessions during their classes, but also thousands of hours of supplementary video on all areas of bioethics, all brought down automatically to your iPod (included with the program - how cool is that - click here to take a look), including lectures and case discussion by professor but also hundreds of the key television and even movie segments on bioethics that have been used in classes forever but not collected into one place.

On top of that, the iPod allows reverse feedback; you can read the information, for example, about a clinical ethics case on the iPod, from the description down to the actual chart (sans identifiers of course), then provide feedback using microphones that is then shared in a room where everyone gets a sense from their instructor as to how it's going.

And of course the iPod isn't the meat of the thing - the courses are taught by great faculty using key reading materials and the same teaching models that have worked in the old AMBI online masters program for more than five years. It's just, well, better. Every course in the Masters (not the clinical ethics certificate) is team taught. There is 24/7 support online including live chat on the web, and alums continue to receive updates of the video and audio materials in the program. The baby is born. Wow – this is really amazing. I had to double check the website numerous times to be sure this wasn’t a sophisticated spoof developed by McGee and friends. But on closer inspection (I even peeked at the application) this is the real deal.
I have met so many physicians and clergy who wish they could earn a Masters in Bioethics but could not because of time, location, and lack of relevant programs.
This program is so outside the usual academic box with its use of podcasts, real-time internet resources (live chat – just like Lands End!), and access to some of the best minds in bioethics (I’m not the only person who has pined for a class with Bonnie Steinbock.)
Glenn – I think you have hit another home run. Sign me up.

This is great. It is just like internet learning only portable. I do have concerns with problems that would be encountered. How would you get assisstance. It is nice to have support everyday any time of the day. Very adaptable to all schedules. I hope that we see more of this.

This is quite a new wave. It is similar to internet learning only it allows live reverse feedback, actual voice/audio materials, and podcasting. Not to mention it is at your finger tips in a small compact iPod. Hopefully other programs with catch this wave and start up their own with other types of educational programs. Although, with computer/online learning, if there was more audio (ex. the actual teacher and student conversing) then wouldn't this new way of using an iPod be the same? I guess the only difference would be the size a versatility of chatting.

I like the idea of ipod learning almost as much as that on online learning. I think that online learning has opened up doors for students that 10 years ago we would have never imagined. To think that you can obtain a degree while in your PJ's drinking coffee was unheard of in the past. It makes it much easier for busy moms or those who lack transportation to get an education from home. I love online learning and an ipod is everything online learning is except it's portable which is even more amazing. It sounds as though learning over the ipod allows for more verbal input and feedback than online. Online we rely on discussion boards or email and those things can take some time to provide the learner with necessary feedback in a timely fashion. I'm sure ipod learning will create a buzz with people everywhere.

That's cool. You can learn at your own pace and get a masters degree to. I like the idea of live chat. The only thing I think may be missing is the fact that when discussing bioethics the live in-classroom discussion with a meeting [or not meeting] of the minds. The constructive critizism (spelling?), the arguing roundtable discussion would be missed.

This is going to be exciting.
